Melander picks up first win in North America

December 5, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

Fredrik Melander who plays goal for prestigious prep school, Trinity-Pawling got the first win of the season as they beat rival, Loomis Chaffee 3-2 in OT. Melander had 33 saves on the evening. The following is a recap from the Trinity-Pawling website and a replay of the game is also available by Connys TV at: http://bambuser.com/v/2180428

Event Recap:
The Trinity-Pawling Pride traveled to Windsor, CT this evening to kick off their 2011-2012 campaign against Founder’s League foe Loomis Chaffee. The Pride overcame a slow start to manage 12 shots in the first en route to a 3-2 overtime victory. Midway through the period, one of those found the back of the net off the stick of Paul Amarone ’13 (Hamden, CT), his first of the season. Amarone was the beneficiary of excellent puck possession from PG Jimmy Burt ’12 (Hamden, CT) and sophomore Charlie Zuccarini ‘14 (Shelton, CT) below the dots. Burt was able to find Defenseman Cody Lefler ’13 (Braceloridge, ONT) for a quick shot from the point and Amarone banged home the rebound. The lead was short lived as Loomis answered back in the waning minutes of the period to even the score at one.

Trinity-Pawling picked up the tempo in the second adding another 10 shots and a goal by Burt, his first in the Blue and Gold. Burt picked the goalie’s pocket behind the net, stepped out, and fired the biscuit in the basket. Fredrik Melander ’12 (Uppsala, Sweden) was perfect in the second; kicking out all 7 shots Loomis threw his way.

Loomis would not go quietly, however, as they began the third with a sense of urgency. The pace quickened and both teams looked hungry to tally the next goal. The Pride found themselves in penalty trouble in the final half of the third as three separate players earned a rest in the sin bin for various offenses. Melander stood strong in net through a barrage of shots during the four minute man down, but Loomis was able to knock in a rebound goal with less than five minutes to play to knot the score.

The overtime period looked like it may last its entirety until the 4:27 mark when Burt found a rebound off a shot from Lefler and snuck a quick wrist shot by the Loomis netminder on the short side to send the Pride home victorious.

Both goaltenders were exceptional on the day as the Loomis keeper finished with 35 saves and Melander stopped the lone shot he faced in OT to finish with 33 saves.

The Pride will unbolt the doors to Tirrell Rink for their home opener this Wednesday vs. Albany Academy @ 4PM.

WEST COAST BOUND

October 24, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

Carlson in action

SHC has players in virtually every league in North America. In general our players choose to play a season in the U.S. for different reasons. Some want to go the NCAA College route while others want to play in a different setting and experience a different hockey culture from what they are used to. Representing a different culture is definitely the Western States Hockey League. The WSHL has existed since 1994 and covers teams on the West Coast. Make no mistake though, these teams are as serious about hockey and committed to winning and development as any other club. However, they do offer a unique hockey setting not common for European players.

The interest for SHC-players in the WSHL is huge among Coaches and General Managers. During the years our players have made their mark in this league and continue to do so. This season is no different and we will highlight some of our 2011/12 players who play their hockey in a much warmer climate than the typical European!

Joakim Moritz is a butterfly goaltender who played for Teg in the Swedish Division 1. He now stops pucks for the Texas Brahmas and carries a .91 % and 3.51 GAA in 4 games. Moritz fills the shoes of departed SHC-player, Anton Olsson who is now in the NCAA for Lawrence University. Head Coach, Jeremy Law has a drive for SHC-players and Moritz has adjusted well to the run and gun style of play in the WSHL. The impressive Swede stopped 41 shots in his debut while beating the Dallas Snipers, 6-2.

Ludwig Carlson played J20 Superelit hockey for Troja Ljungby in Sweden. Carlson is now with the San Diego Gulls who is on top in the Western Division. Carlson has 5 assists in 13 games along with 28 penalty minutes so far. Coach Carlyle has the boys working hard on and off the ice and we think that Carlson and the Gulls will be a contender this season.

Dennis Allingmon hails from Stockholm and played J20 hockey for Göta/Traneberg in Sweden. Allingmon is a forward who works extremely hard on and off the ice and has tremendous passion for the sport. He has 3 points in 9 games for his Arizona Redhawks and continues to develop on the North American rinks. The Redhawks who are coached by Rob Powell had a starting goalie from SHC in Peter Sjöström last season. This season Sjöström is stopping rubber in Sweden while Allingmon carries on the Swedish success in the Arizona desert.

THE STOCKHOLM CONNECTION

October 17, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

Eliasson wheels around (picture property of bozemandailychronicle.com)

Ever since the start of SHC in 2009 we have had a steady stream of clients and interest from the Stockholm area. This season is no different and we would like to introduce some of our clients from Sweden’s capital city.

Hugo Oftedal of the Northern Cyclones continues his domination of the Atlantic League. Oftedal picked up 2 wins this weekend in a sweep over the Portland Jr Pirates. He pitched his second shutout of the season on the Sunday game. In his 6 games as a Cyclone, Oftedal is undefeated and has a remarkable .959 % and a 1.08 GAA. Last season Oftedal started for Huddinge IK in the J20 Superelit league and has played for some of the top development programs in the Stockholm area. Also a brilliant student we look for Oftedal to end up at a high end NCAA institution in the future.

Erik Eliasson played Junior A hockey for Vallentuna BK last season. The speedy forward has adjusted well to North American hockey and gets thumbs up from Coach Zaniboni of the Bozeman Icedogs. The Icedogs play in the newly formed AWHL which includes legendary junior teams such as the Billings Bulls, Helena Bighorns, and the Great Falls Americans. These three teams plus the Bozeman Icedogs all played in the old AWHL before merging with the NAHL. After a few years in the Norpac league they decided to re-form the AWHL which seems to be a wise decision. Eliasson has put up 6 points in 6 games including 4 goals.

Oskar Kjellberg of the New York Bobcats is coming along on Long Island. The Bobcats also play in the Atlantic League and has been one of the top teams for years in that league. Kjellberg is a speedy forward who always goes to the net. Last season in Sweden he played for Vallentuna BK in both Division 1 and the Junior A team. Kjellberg is a terrific student who is looking to gain NCAA exposure by playing for the Bobcats.

Eric Eriksson is one of the biggest players in the Eastern Junior League. Eriksson plays for the New England Huskies who recently beat powerhouse New Hampshire Monarchs. The Huskies are 5-5-0 on the season and makes steady improvement. Eriksson has played for a number of teams in the Stockholm area but made the move 2 seasons ago to Malmo Redhawks and the J20 Superelit league. While with the Redhawks, Eriksson was a steady defenseman playing on a regular basis against the best Junior A players in the nation. Eriksson continues to draw college interest and we are expecting him in the NCAA next season.

SHC GOALIE SPECIAL

October 11, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments
Fabian Sivnert

Fabian Sivnert

It is time to highlight the many SHC-goalies who are in action this season on North American soil. Highlighting the class of 2012 is Chicago Steel starter, Mathias Dahlstrom who played last season for the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American League. Dahlstrom had a 2.88 GAA and a .908 % last season in 39 games for the Brown Bears. He also picked up 17 wins which is the most wins in team history by a goalie. This season he is stopping pucks for the Chicago Steel and continues to draw significant NCAA D1 interest. Dahlstrom plays a fluid butterfly style and reads the game very well. The new look Steel team are off to a 2-1 start on the season and will continue to battle for points every night.

Fabian Sivnert is coming along and has started making an impact with the Valley Warriors of the heavily scouted Eastern Jr League. His Warriors recently took 3 points in 2 games against powerhouse, Jersey Hitmen. In the second game, a 7-5 win, Sivnert also picked up an assist. Last season Sivnert played for the Malmo Redhawks J20 team as a starter. At Christmas break his team made a trip to Canada to face BCHL competition in which the Redhawks won the majority of the games including a win over league Champion, Powel River Kings. Sivnert is looking for college opportunities in the future and we are expecting good things to come from him.

Hugo Oftedal of the Northern Cyclones continues to play extremely well in net. Oftedal is 4-0 on the season with a .947 %. Last season he played as a starter on Huddinge J20 team in the Swedish Superelit league. Oftedal who hails from Stockholm has excellent grades and wants to play college hockey in the future. In his first ever game as a Cyclone he shut out the New York Bobcats. The Atlantic league is a respected league with a solid alumni list including several NCAA D1 and D3 commitments.

Joakim Moritz of the Texas Brahmas has a .915 % and is 2-0 on the season. Moritz, a butterfly goalie has shown he can hold his own in the Western States League. He replaces last season´s SHC-player, Anton Olsson who was called up to Corpus Christi of the NAHL mid-season. Moritz played Division 1 hockey for Teg last season in Sweden and has adjusted well to a much warmer climate in Texas.

Viktor Ahlund is stopping pucks for the Bradford Ratllers in the GMHL. Ahlund was a late addition but through SHC he found a home in Canada where he can improve his game. He has started one game so far and stopped 28 shots on 32 shots while getting the win. Last season Ahlund played Division 2 hockey in Sweden for Osby IK. Ahlund also has experience from prep school hockey in the United States having played for Lyndon Institute in Vermont.

Fredrik Melander will play prep school hockey this season. Melander will step on the ice for the Trinity-Pawling team on the East Coast. In Sweden Melander played for Leksands IF in both J18 and J20 Superelit. We expect him to make a huge impact this season and as a 93 born he is slated to play a season or two before making the jump to NCAA college hockey. Melander is also an excellent student and takes his academics seriously.

SHC has a number of top prospect goalies in the pipeline who are still playing in Sweden and will make the jump next season.

Client Update

October 10, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

As the season gets underway we will try to highlight some of the performances of our players.

Chicago Steel and Mathias Dahlstrom are off to a 2-1 start in the USHL. The Steel beat Muskegon and lost to Youngstown this past weekend. Dahlstrom had 27 saves in the 6-3 win over Muskegon at Edge Arena in Chicago on Saturday.

Robin Hoglund got his first taste of the USHL and was in the lineup Saturday and Sunday night for his Sioux City Musketeers. The USHL is arguably the toughest and highest calibre league in the United States and we look for Hoglund to adjust well with time.

Eric Eriksson and the New England Huskies have 3 straight wins in the EJ. The Huskies beat the Valley Warriors in Haverhill and went on to sweep the Capital District Selects on home ice this past weekend. Eriksson, a 6 foot 6 defenseman from Stockholm recorded his first point on the season as he picked up an assist against the Selects.

Richard Jansson of the Flint Jr Generals is a lethal scoring threat in the NA3HL. Jansson has 14 points in 10 games up to this date. Jansson who hails from Gothenburg wants to play NCAA hockey in the future.

Forward, Kalle Trogens of the Southern Oregon Spartans is 8th in league scoring in the Norpac. His Spartans swept the Yellostone Quake in 3 games and Trogens continues to be a top player in the league.

Several other clients were in action as well and SHC continues to make an impact in North American hockey.

USHL FALL CLASSIC

September 27, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

Our staff has been busy the entire summer and fall. We have established ourselves as the primary source for helping talented European players to North America. As a result of that we have extended our travel schedule to meet with Coaches from Junior and NCAA as well as our own players of course! The demand from SHC-recruited players is sky high and we expect to continue our trend of sending top players to Junior and College hockey.

SHC-owner, Daniel Ljung at Tyson Center in Sioux City, IA

The USHL is clearly the top league in North American Junior Hockey. Pro and College scouts came in from all over to watch the Fall Classic tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. Since SHC represents starting Chicago Steel goalie, Mathias Dahlstrom and Sioux City Musketeers power forward, Robin Hoglund we were certainly in attendance.

Dahlstrom, Ljung and Hoglund

Dahlstrom created a huge buzz around himself by playing a solid positioning game along with his all around athletic style in net. His Chicago Steel went 1-2 and beat the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday morning. Hoglund skated for his Musketeers in the Saturday game. Both players are highly touted and we expect to see them on the big stage anytime soon.

SHC-player, Erik Moberg is tearing it up in the Atlantic League. Moberg who plays for the WB/Scranton Knights has 6 points in 6 games so far and has already been named player of the week. Moberg is a power forward with great hands who has already drawn college attention. With his incredible work ethic we expect him to move up the hockey ladder sooner, rather than later.

SHC at NAHL SHOWCASE

September 27, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

SHC-staff gathered in Blaine, MN for the annual North American League Showcase. The event is heavily scouted by both college and pro scouts. The showcase is probably the most organized event in junior hockey and displayed a great level of talent on the ice. Fairbanks, Fresno, and Janesville all had perfect 4-0 records at the showcase.

SHC-player, Renato Engler and his Wichita Falls Wildcats got off to a rough 0-3 start but beat the Austin Bruins on the final day of play. Engler drew college attention with his gritty and energetic style of play. Engler played last season for Davos in the Swiss Junior A league and put up huge numbers and was also awarded a spot on Team Switzerland for the U20 World Junior Championship team.

SHC Owner, Daniel Ljung and client, Renato Engler

SHC was also able to catch some of the NA3HL games and PHL games that were played in the huge Super Rink complex that covers 8 sheets of ice. It is worth noticing that SHC draws a lot of attention in every North American junior league and continues to be the primary resource for European players wishing to play hockey in North America.

SHC-Client to USHL

August 16, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

It has been a hectic few weeks, as many players have decided to use SHC as their primary resource to move to the US to play hockey. Most of our clients have arrived to their teams in North America, and those who have not will do so in the next few weeks. The most recent client to move to the US will do so very soon.

Gothenburg-born Robin Höglund has committed to play for the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League. Widely regarded the best Tier I junior hockey league in the world, the USHL currently has 163 alumni currently playing in the NHL and 283 NCAA Division I college commitments. Needless to say, Höglund will be able to develop in the best possible environment for young aspiring hockey players.

Robin Höglund will be moving to Sioux City, IA to continue his hockey career

Robin Höglund will be moving to Sioux City, IA to continue his hockey career

SHC has worked with Höglund for a long time. As Robin and his family expressed a goal of Robin playing NCAA Hockey, we have tried to prepare Robin to achieve his goal. After playing the past few years for Troja-Ljungby in Sweden, Robin participated in the hockey camp SHC arranged with NHL-pro Michael Nylander in Stockholm in July. While there, Robin impressed the coaches to such an extent he was invited to skate with the Swedish NHL-players all week while staying with Nylander. Robin is a big strong player with a great show and incredible speed, and it will be exciting to follow his career as he already gathered a lot of NCAA interest from big schools.

Oskar got in touch with SHC at the end of July while participating in a hockey camp we were running with Swedish NHL-pro Michael Nylander and University of Notre Dame Coach Andy Slaggert. Kjellberg stood out as a fast skater, top notch student, and determined player, who expressed a dream of playing hockey in North America.

The Bobcats are coached by Ed Galiani. Coach Galiani, no stranger to Sweden himself where he spent several years as a player. He has a reputation of putting together a top team every year, and has sent over 60 players to college. The Bobcats play out of Long Island, NY. The unique experience of living in New York City while playing junior hockey will be extremely rewarding for Kjellberg.

Former Allsvenskan Player to the US

August 9, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

The summer is slowly but surely coming to an end, which means the hockey season is getting closer. SHC has had a very busy summer. In addition to our usual work to serve our clients, we have ran hockey camps in both North America and Scandinavia – and have conducted Staff Meetings with members of our North American and Scandinavian Offices in Leksand.

Our most recent client to sign a contract in North America is fast skating defenseman Oscar Björkander from Oskarshamn. Oscar is a skilled defenseman that, in addition to his quick feet, has good puck poise, and great leadership qualities.

Oscar has played for Oskarshamn’s junior team the past three seasons, but also played games in Allsvenskan – the second highest league in the country. Oscar is looking to move to the US to develop as a player, and get the experience of a lifetime.

Next season, Oscar will represent the Missoula Maulers of the America West Hockey League. Missoula are coached by Marcus Baxter, a coach known for putting together competitive teams and moving his players on to higher levels of hockey. Last season, the Maulers were one of the top teams in the NORPAC, only falling short to Helena Bighorns – who went on and won the entire USA Hockey Tier III National Championships. This season, the Maulers have followed the top organizations in the NORPAC and re-created the AWHL.

With an average fan-base of over 1000 people per game, massive local media coverage, and a top notch organization we look forward to following Oscar and the Maulers in the inaugural season of the “new AWHL”.

During the 2010-2011 season, he amassed almost 2 points per game for HC Davos Junior A Team which was good for fourth overall in the Elite Jr A League in Switzerland. In addition to his strong club play, Renato has represented his native Switzerland on several occasions, most recently at the U20 World Junior Championships in Buffalo where he competed with the best junior hockey players in the world.

Renato’s goal is to play NCAA Division I Hockey, which is why he has decided to play his last junior hockey year in North America. For the 2011-2012 season, Renato will represent the Wichita Falls Wildcats of the NAHL.

Renato had several options where to play, but the opportunity to play under former NHL-player/Coach Paul Baxter made Renato feel that Wichita Falls was his best option. Baxter has had success everywhere he coached, and has an excellent track record of moving players onto Division I NCAA Hockey.

Some other SHC-clients that have played in the NAHL include Johan Skinnars who was named Team Captain, participated in the Top-Prospects Tournament, and was named the All-West Team, Johan Björklund who was the team Captain for Fresno Monsters, Mathias Dahlström who was stellar in net for Kenai River and will represent the Chicago Steel of the USHL this coming season, and Erik Persson who logged heavy minutes on the blueline for the Kenai River Brown Bears.

Several high end junior players in Europe have used Scandinavian Hockey Consulting as their resource to play in North America. Are you the next player to take the step? If you want to be, contact us!

As SHC’s main Scout in Norway, Lysenstoen will work to actively recruit top Norwegian talent. In the current and the past several good players have made the move from Norway to North America and we look to continue that path.

SHC Owner, Daniel Ljung is very happy about the addition of Lysenstoen to the SHC staff, “I think that adding André to the mix really indicates what we want to do at SHC in bringing top European players to North American Junior Leagues and the NCAA. We have been looking for a Norwegian scout for a while, and several very qualified candidates expressed interest. However, with André’s background and strong belief in what we do, he stood out as the best option to lead SHC’s expansion to Norway. He is young and motivated with great connections and a positive personality, he will be a great asset for SHC and we look to expand his personal network and create opportunities for him as well”.

Client Update

May 19, 2011  |  latest news  |  No Comments

The 2010-2011 Season is in the books, and many of our players reached milestones and achieved honors throughout the year. William Thorén had a stellar first NCAA season tallying four goals and a totalt of twenty points in twenty eight games. For his achievements, Thorén was named to the NCAA-MCHA All-Freshman team, and as the only rookie in the entire league he was voted into the NCAA-MCHA All-Conference Team. The players are nominated by their coaches, and then voted upon by the other coaches in the conference.

However, Thorén’s season honors did not end there. Last week, he was named Freshman Athlete of the year at Lawrence University. Lawrence University has a total of seventeen Varsity sports, so William being named the most outstanding Freshman out of all of those sports is a great honor.

Several other clients has had a great year in North America. Marcus Dahlstrom was named Assistant Captain of the Long Beach Bombers, and after a mid season trade to Walpole Express he was part of the Championship winning Walpole Express on the AtJHL. Marcus also competed in the USA Hockey Tier III National Tournament. Dahlstrom is currently considering options as he has received several NCAA offers.

Anton Olsson stood on his head all season for three different Texas teams. The Texas Brahmas of the WSHL, and two call ups to Corpus Christi and Amarillo of the NAHL. Anton was named to the Tier III “Best of the Rest” tournament for the best Tier III players in the country who’s’ teams did not make it to Nationals. Anton Olsson will play NCAA hockey in the fall.

Peter Sjöström of the Arizona Redhawks is another goalie who had a great year. Like Anton Olsson, Sjöström was named to the “Best of the Rest” team for his league.

Andreas Olofsson of the Yellowstone Quake was also named to the “Best of the Rest” team for his league, the NORPAC.

In the NAHL, Borlänge born Johan Björklund was named Team Captain for the Fresno Monsters. Being named captain as an import player is a great honor, and we are very proud of Johan’s success in California.

On a separate note, after being drafted by the Chicago Steel of the USHL it is now official that Mathias Dahlstrom will leave the Kenai River Brown Bears of the NAHL to represent the Steel. Mathias had a strong first season in North America and gathered a lot of interest from colleges and USHL teams.

Chicago Steel’s Director of Player Personnel, Max Giese, says “”We are very excited about drafting Mathias and our staff expects him to compete for the starting job. He’s a talented, hard-working goaltender and he has the mental fortitude we covet at the position.”

On Chicago Steel’s website, the following is written about Mathias:
“With their 14th round pick, the Steel selected Mathias Dahlstrom from Smedjebacken, Sweden. Dahlstrom is the first Goaltender selected by the Steel in this years Entry Draft. Last season the 6’0, 180lb 1991 birth year played for Kenai River of the NAHL.

The Scouting Report: Terrific athlete and has good size with a great technical base. Brings age and experience between the pipes and should be a rock in the net for the Chicago Steel.”
